Michael Hampton + Hampton & Co

Meet Michael Hampton, owner of a high-end antique shop right in the heart of Rockport Village. Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Michael spent years working as an interior designer before moving to Washington, D.C., where he opened his own design office in 2009. But it was the charm of Midcoast Maine that won him over. After summering in Rockport for years, Michael moved here full-time in 2020, finding an instant connection to the community.

Michael’s shop, Hampton & Co (@hamptonandcomaine), opened two years ago and is filled with carefully curated pieces, many of which started out as his personal collection. His passion for European antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries shines through, particularly French and Italian pieces, though he’s also drawn to Asian decorative arts, ceramics, and sculpture. “I buy what I love,” he says, and his shop is a true reflection of that.

With a deep respect for architecture and its emotional power, Michael considers himself a “modern classicist,” inspired by the neoclassical forms and Greek and Roman influences. His expertise in both interior design and architectural history has guided him in creating impactful spaces throughout his career.

In addition to his shop, Michael still offers his interior design expertise, working with clients locally and in D.C. “There’s so much power in space,” he says. “Knowing this has always guided me in creating rooms and spaces for my clients.” While most of his clients remain in Washington, he’s always eager to connect with local homeowners who want to create timeless, emotionally resonant spaces.
