Lincolnville is abuzz with excitement as the beloved General Store embarks on a new chapter under the stewardship of Matt Pierce and Whitney Hughes. Matt, a Lincolnville native, grew up on Beach Road and is the son of the cherished Marie Pierce, who many will remember from the front desk at Lincolnville Central School. Whitney, who attended high school on Mount Desert Island, raised her three sons in Camden. After completing graduate school in Michigan, she and her family lived in Hawai'i before returning to Camden, where she met Matt. Together, they are bringing fresh energy and heartfelt dedication to Owen’s General Store.

For close to 20 years, Matt worked at Megunticook Market in Camden, where he honed his skills in various roles, including purchasing. His familiarity with local suppliers has facilitated a smooth transition, bolstered by strong community support.

However, their journey has not been without hardship. On August 3, 2023, Whitney's son, Owen Eldridge, tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident. In a beautiful tribute, Whitney and Matt have named the store after Owen, honoring his entrepreneurial spirit. Owen, a college student, had a passion for business, evident since his high school days in Hawai'i where he ran his own car detailing business.

Whitney finds solace in the shared experiences of her customers, many of whom have also endured the loss of a loved one. She has talked about creating a memory garden across the street, on the land that houses the store's well, as a place of reflection and remembrance.

Whitney and Matt envision Owen's General Store as more than just a place to shop. They want it to be a gathering spot for the Midcoast community—a place where people can meet, "talk story", and enjoy good food with family and friends. With indoor and outdoor seating, visitors can savor a slice of wood-fired pizza or a cup of coffee while soaking in the picturesque surroundings.

Whitney says, “We have some great ideas coming—the execution is just going to take a bit of time. But we’re thinking of a smoothie bar, a frozen yogurt machine... more to come!”

The duo is deeply rooted in the community and they’re eager to strengthen those connections further. Matt’s longstanding ties to the area and Whitney’s nurturing vision make Owen’s General Store a beacon of community spirit in Lincolnville.
