Ryan Howes of Northern Vertical

For Ryan Howes, owner and operator of Northern Vertical, climbing is more than a sport—it’s a path to growth and self-discovery. Since founding Northern Vertical in 2015, Ryan has been guiding climbers of all levels through Maine’s cliffs and peaks, offering year-round adventures that include the challenges of winter ice and mixed terrain climbs.

Ryan brings an impressive educational background to his work: he holds a Master’s degree in Experiential Education and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Adventure Therapy and Adventure Education Leadership. After teaching at the university and college levels for two years, he decided to focus entirely on professional guiding. With over 150 climbing routes established across Maine—including 100 in Camden—Ryan has earned a reputation as the state’s go-to climbing guide. His mission is to empower climbers to achieve autonomy, whether they’re families just starting out or seasoned adventurers tackling Maine’s toughest routes.

Northern Vertical operates year-round, offering a rare opportunity to explore Maine’s rugged landscapes during winter. Ryan describes climbing as a transformative experience that builds resilience and provides lessons applicable far beyond the cliffs. And his impact on the climbing community extends further: Ryan is the founder of the Camden Climbing Festival, a celebration of the local climbing scene and an event dedicated to education, stewardship, and inspiration for adventurers of all ages.
