The Inn at Sunrise Point in Lincolnville
Set on a rocky stretch of Lincolnville coastline, the Inn at Sunrise Point lives up to its name in full. Mornings here are the main event, with guests rising early to sip coffee as the sky shifts pink and gold over Islesboro. The water comes right up to the edge of the four-and-a-half-acre property, where Adirondack chairs face the bay and lobster boats chug past. It’s a peaceful, oceanfront escape with a deep sense of intention behind every detail.
Owners Matt and MJ Ruffing took over the inn in May 2021, drawn to the charm of the property and the chance to shape their own vision of hospitality. They’ve continued a tradition of high-touch, personalized service while layering in their own touches, from seasonal tulip plantings to fresh herbs and edible flowers grown on-site. Each of the five standalone suites—often called cottages, though they feel more like private mini-retreats—features fireplaces, luxurious bathrooms, soaking tubs, and private decks. Even the rooms in the main house have expansive views and high-end finishes.
Breakfast is served on the porch, where you might catch a seal sighting or a bald eagle diving for bait. The Ruffings, who are avid travelers themselves, collaborate on the menu with a focus on thoughtful sourcing and generous portions. Everything is made from scratch, including the bread and pastries. And while the inn doesn’t promote itself as a bar destination, the cozy library lounge is stocked with quality spirits and wine for guests to enjoy.
From May through October, the gardens steal the show. Designed to bloom in succession, they feature uncommon varietals and curated planting schemes that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Inside, each room is styled with original artwork sourced from local galleries like Page Gallery and Carver Hill. Between the fresh flowers, rotating art, and dedicated team of innkeepers, it’s a place where every stay feels quietly remarkable. As MJ says, "The most overused word in the summer season is 'magical'... but here, it really is."
