The Wharf at Lyman Morse
With Maine’s more than 3,500 miles of coastline and 4,600 islands, boat building is essential to the state’s way of life. From sailing vessels to lobster boats, people have needed the means to get out on the water for their livelihood or enjoyment for centuries. Having built over 200 custom boats in their Thomaston yard since the 1920s, Lyman-Morse is integral to the region’s fabric and is considered one of Maine’s top boatbuilding and technology companies.
In the early days, it was sloops and schooners, but in the 1970s, the company expanded into custom sailing and motorized yachts. With its quality craftsmanship and world-class designs, Lyman-Morse is known throughout the sailing world for building award-winning boats.
Continued growth and expansion of the business have been mainstays of this family-owned venture. In 2015, Lyman-Morse purchased Wayfarer Marine in Camden, giving the company a presence in the heart of Penobscot Bay’s cruising grounds. They have increased its capacity by adding more than three acres of waterfront and hired several talented craftspeople to their highly respected team.
President/Owner Drew Lyman and his team have worked diligently to create a state-of-the-art waterfront marina facility that focuses on community and draws locals and visitors alike to the north side of the harbor. As Drew’s wife, Lyman-Morse’s Chief Marketing Officer Mackenzie Lyman, put it, “We wanted to create something that acknowledges the location and history of this place. The look is Scandinavian fishing village with Lyman Morse as the central hub. Back when we first bought the property, Drew was sitting on an old wharf and thought, ‘Why am I the only one enjoying this view?’ so we started reaching out to people we knew who could bring their businesses to the waterfront.”
And create a community, they did. The wharf currently features two full-service restaurants, a cozy coffee shop, a snazzy cocktail bar, retail space for shopping, office spaces, and luxury accommodations — all with stunning views of Camden Harbor! In addition, they’ve added special events like pub crawls, cookie walks, and community Easter Egg hunts.
