Aura Ellis + Flaura Flowers & Wine
Located on Main Street in the historic Union Block of Thomaston, Maine, Flaura Flowers & Wine emerges as a distinctive and engaging space that embodies the passion and dedication of Camden-native, Aura Ellis. The moment you walk through the doors, the bright sunlight shining through the front windows illuminates a collection of vibrant bouquets, lush topiaries, and an inviting selection of local sweets and expertly chosen wines.
Aura and her husband, who is a fifth-generation resident from Cushing, manage their own farm in Cushing. This farm not only serves as their home but is also a source of many of the flowers Aura arranges and sells. Flaura is less of a flower shop and more of a floral lifestyle boutique; a reflection of Aura's extensive background in retail, interior design, and gardening.
The shop’s transition from an idea cultivated over many years when Aura discovered her flair for flower design and farming, to a thriving storefront in 2022, she was driven by a need she saw in the community—there wasn’t a fine wine shop between Damariscotta and Rockland. Initially starting as a mix of floristry and wine retail, Flaura has evolved into something resembling a European style market, complete with chocolates, bread, and cheeses, thanks to Aura’s broad vision.
Aura's commitment to her community is clear. She ensures her products—whether flowers from her farm or those sourced from other local growers—reflect a dedication to sustainability and local entrepreneurship. The wine club at Flaura is a signature element of the shop, with Aura selecting two special bottles each month that are not typically available in-store. This club meets on the first Wednesday of each month for tastings and offers discounts to club members, making it a cherished local gathering.
Aura says, “Thomaston is a service town, not a tourist town. People don’t just stumble upon my shop; they come here with purpose, for their weekly provisions.” Besides seasonal offerings, the shop consistently stocks candles, plants, linens and tabletop.
Flaura Flowers & Wine stands as a testament to Aura’s passion for creating a place where the community can find both beauty and utility. Each week, her signature hand-tied market bouquets sell out, proving that even in the depths of Maine’s winters, the locals’ appetite for fresh, beautiful flowers endures. As much as Flaura is about flowers and wine, it’s equally about fostering a sense of community and belonging in Thomaston.
