Hope Learning Foundation in Camden
Hope Learning Foundation opened quietly in late summer 2023, tucked into a sunny space just off Route 1 in Camden. It offers something that can be hard to come by for parents of young children: two hours of rest, productivity, or conversation—while their kids stay close by, immersed in imaginative, supervised play.
Founded by Heather Schultz, a former toy designer and early childhood educator, Hope Learning Foundation centers around what she calls “high-quality sensory play.” The space is divided into zones: a main open play area with carefully chosen tactile materials and toys, a quiet room filled with books and pillows for kids who need a break, and a movement room where children can climb, jump, and (literally) bounce off the walls. “Everything here is designed to support kids’ development,” Schultz says, “but also to give parents a moment to breathe.”
Parents or caregivers stay on site—this isn’t a drop-off daycare—but Schultz’s presence allows them to disengage just enough. There’s reliable Wi-Fi, seating for work or conversation, and a growing sense of community. Memberships are available for repeat visitors, and the space can also be rented for birthday parties or private play dates. “I hear it all the time,” Schultz says. “‘I feel like I just got a massage.’ That’s how relieved people are to have a moment for themselves while knowing their kids are safe and happy.”
Though still in its first year, Hope Learning Foundation has plans to grow. As a nonprofit, Schultz hopes to expand access through scholarships and free programming. “Right now, most of the families who come here are pretty well resourced,” she says. “I want to find a way to welcome everyone.” The space is also available to others who want to host child-focused programming, from art classes to music lessons—anything that builds connection and brings kids back to the basics of imaginative, unplugged play.
FAMOUS FOR:
Creating a calm, imaginative space where young children engage in hands-on sensory play while their caregivers get a rare chance to rest, work, or connect—without leaving the room. It's especially appreciated for its thoughtful layout, unplugged toys, and the sense of community it fosters among parents, caregivers, and kids alike.
