Downshift Coffee in Belfast
Downshift Coffee opened its doors in May 2020, just as the world was adjusting to the early days of the pandemic. Owner Nathaniel Baer, who had recently relocated to Belfast with his family, initially operated the café through a walk-up window, serving customers outdoors while indoor seating remained closed. This approach allowed him to connect with the community during a time of social distancing, and many of those early customers remain regulars today.
The café's name, Downshift, reflects both a nod to its original partnership with a neighboring bike shop and an invitation to slow down and enjoy the moment. As the business grew, Baer expanded into the full space, creating a welcoming environment with approximately 30 indoor seats, additional outdoor seating, and views of the water. The walls feature rotating exhibits from local artists, enhancing the café's atmosphere.
Downshift Coffee roasts its own beans in a separate facility across town, ensuring freshness and quality. The café also offers house-made chai and a selection of baked goods prepared from scratch daily. Baer emphasizes a focused menu, aiming to excel in a curated selection of offerings. The café operates seven days a week, year-round, providing consistent service to both locals and visitors.
In addition to serving customers at the café, Downshift collaborates with local businesses by providing custom coffee blends and wholesale options. Their coffee is available at the Belfast Food Co-op, Anodyne Book Shop, and Dos Gatos, among others. This community-oriented approach reflects Baer’s broader goal: to make Downshift not just a place to get great coffee, but a connector across Belfast’s small business landscape.
