Hurricane Island
Hurricane Island might just be one of Midcoast Maine’s best-kept secrets, and it's more than worth the journey. Invited by Nate Hathaway, the island’s Outreach Manager, we learned firsthand how this slice of rugged paradise is a place where history, nature, and community intertwine. Nate’s words, “A prudent sailor is always prudent,” ring especially true as you approach this unspoiled place 10 miles off the coast. The island is open to the public but does require a bit of a voyage to reach its moorings.
The island has deep roots. Outward Bound, the renowned adventure education organization, got its start right here. They’ve since moved on, and Hurricane Island has maintained its dedication to experiential learning, now focused on marine and island ecology and research as Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership. Nate was excited to share their hands-on approach to exploring the island’s ecosystem, through their “epic tide pools”, scallop dissections and new projects that will measure changes in Penobscot Bay. It’s a place where youth, in particular, can dive into unique summer programs that foster both curiosity and respect for the natural world.
One of the exciting initiatives on the island is their experimental aquaculture site. With 10,000 scallops currently growing, Hurricane Island is collaborating with organizations such as NOAA and The Nature Conservancy. The researchers and educators work with local students and fisherfolk to capture wild scallop spat, as there are no hatcheries for scallops in the area, and the scallop population in Maine is still being understood. Researchers are also using biodegradable beech fiber coverings, pioneering sustainable practices that not only promote scallop growth but could also help sequester carbon on the sea floor.
While you won’t find winterized buildings, you’ll find plenty of beautiful views along the island’s network of public trails. For anyone looking to explore Maine’s coastal beauty and learn from passionate stewards of the environment, Hurricane Island is an adventure just waiting to be had.
