Andy Skrivanich of Maine Outdoor Guides

Twelve years ago, Andy Skrivanich moved to Midcoast Maine from the West Coast, bringing with him a lifetime of fishing experience. From high-elevation trout streams to competitive bass tournaments, he’s done it all. These days, he channels that knowledge into a guiding business rooted in education, hospitality, and a deep love of being on the water. Through Maine Outdoor Guides, Andy offers everything from half-day and full-day trips to multi-day excursions, fly fishing instruction, nature tours, and even catered fishing-and-grouse-hunting retreats in the Rangeley Lakes region each fall.

Based in Camden and licensed as both a Tidewater Guide and a Coast Guard six-pack captain, Andy is equally comfortable drifting Maine’s inland rivers or piloting his boat along the coast. “A lot of people assume you need to already know how to fish to book a trip,” he says. “But I’m here to teach. And I don’t fish on my trips. It’s all about you.” All equipment is provided, and each outing is customized based on the group’s experience level, goals, and preferences, down to dietary needs for on-the-water snacks or full lunches.

While the scenery is stunning and the species varied—striped bass, pike, trout, shad, and smallmouth bass among them—it’s the relaxed, personal nature of the experience that keeps people coming back. “Some clients come once to check it off the bucket list,” Andy says. “But others? We stay in touch all year. They fish with me season after season, bring their kids, call me for advice. That’s the part I love.”

Whether he’s taking families out to Fernald’s Neck for swimming and a picnic, showing visiting anglers how to fly cast, or talking tactics at the Camden fire station where he also works as a firefighter, Andy’s approach is consistent. He meets people where they are, makes it easy and enjoyable, and leaves them wanting to return. “You can be a total beginner or a seasoned angler,” he says. “Either way, being on the water helps you slow down and reconnect. With the outdoors, and with yourself.”
