Sondra Hamilton + Zoot Coffee
Zoot Coffee, located at 5 Elm Street, is the anchor of our bustling community. It was launched in July 2006 by Sondra Hamilton, whose initial visit inspired a lasting commitment to the town. Sondra’s dream of opening a coffee shop stems from her college days; she fell in love with the cafe culture while working as a barista and later realized during her time at Stanford that her true passion lay in creating a welcoming coffee space of her own.
“There’s only one rule at Zoot,” Sondra says, “and that’s when you’re in here, you have to be nice.” This ethos helps foster a sense of community and positivity that makes Zoot more than just a place for great coffee.
From its first days on the town’s outskirts to its bustling present location next to French and Brawn, Zoot Coffee has seen Camden’s quiet charm evolve into a vibrant community hub. Here, Sondra and her team, including her daughter Molly, who leads the baking efforts, embrace the daily flow of life with open doors and warm smiles, ensuring that Zoot remains a beloved fixture.
It’s also a showcase for local art, displayed without commission, and a place where coffee beans are freshly roasted on-site. Their eco-friendly Bellwether roaster, which Sondra playfully compares to the “Tesla of coffee-makers,” ensures each batch is perfect. This approach highlights her dedication to innovation and sustainability, integral to Zoot’s charm and success.
Every day, Zoot Coffee is a testament to the strength of community and the joy of shared spaces. With its doors open seven days a week, Zoot serves as a steadfast haven where everyone is welcome, and every visit is met with the promise of great coffee and great company. Whether it’s a rainy Monday or a sunny Saturday, Zoot Coffee stands ready to serve up not just coffee, but a place to gather, unwind, and enjoy the best of Camden.
