5 Best Spots for Family Photos in Midcoast Maine

Owls Head Lighthouse

The best photographers know that the way to get beautiful photos is to take them in amazing light. The natural sunlight at the Owls Head Lighthouse is simply unmatched, and the landscape is gorgeous. There’s a beach, a rocky cliff, a weathered outbuilding, and of course, the lighthouse itself. It may actually be more difficult to take a bad photo than a good one! Bonus: Kids love skipping rocks, climbing on them, and exploring and photos of them in action usually end up being the most cherished of all!

Camden Amphitheater

We can’t think of a location that offers more variety in such close proximity! The outdoor garden amphitheater is across the street from picturesque Harbor Park, and only steps to downtown (if you’re looking for a more urban backdrop). There are granite staircases, hanging vines, and an especially gorgeous tree that has leaves that turn a deep red in the fall. Bonus: Families that might want to include their four-legged friend in their photos will appreciate that this location is very pet-friendly!

Crockett’s Beach

This location can be a bit trickier to schedule than the others (it’s best suited to be photographed at sunset and low tide) but it’s worth the extra effort! Families love this spot for the sandy beach and all the seagrass which makes it a great place for kids to run around and explore between your posed photos. Worth factoring in: the candid shots of your kid’s delight always end up being crowd-pleasers!

Beech Hill

Another unbeatable location for fall photos here in Midcoast Maine! From the summit, you’ll have a view of the rolling Camden Hills and nearby lakes. The stone building at the top is actually a 1913 Norweigan sod-roofed hut and it adds another dimension of visual interest to your photos.

Worth noting: There’s about a half mile of uphill walking to get to the top. It’s a wide, clear path and while it is stroller-friendly, we wouldn’t call it heel-friendly! (But you can always carry them in a bag!)

Rockport, Maine

Shell Midden

Whaleback Shell Midden State Park is a shell midden, consisting primarily of piled oyster shells located on the east side of the Damariscotta River. It’s a very green, very gorgeous spot. There are apple trees and plenty of space for the kids to burn off some energy. The sunset is magnificent here and it provides a beautiful backdrop for family photos. Bonus: Roundtop Ice Cream is right next door! Photographer Jocelin Wall is always game to follow a family there after a session, snap a few more pictures, and enjoy an ice cream cone with you!
