Meet Sculptor Jon Morro
Jon Moro, a native of Midcoast Maine and a long-time resident, discovered his passion for art unexpectedly. After studying at Colby College, Jon began experimenting with creating art. “On a whim, I just started making things. I wasn’t good at first, but something clicked,” he recalls. Over the next seven years, he honed his skills and earned his art degree from the University of Maine at Augusta.
Today, Jon is a celebrated wood sculptor, known for his dynamic sculptures of sports figures, capturing the essence of motion in wood. His approach transforms the static nature of wood into vivid, expressive forms. “There’s something special about it. It feels more expressive to me than metal or plastic,” Jon explains. This passion for movement and expression is a central theme in his work, and over his 20-year career, he has sold more than 115 sculptures.
Creating these pieces is no small feat. It typically takes Jon about six weeks to complete a 12-inch sculpture, while larger works can take up to three months. His most ambitious project to date, a piece titled “David & Goliath,” took three years to complete.
Jon’s artistic process is guided by four critical questions: Does it look human? Are the proportions right? Does it not fall apart? Does it look like the person it’s meant to represent? This meticulous attention to detail ensures that each piece not only meets the highest standards of craftsmanship but also resonates with viewers.
Aside from his art, Jon is deeply embedded in the local community. He works as an Educational Technician at Camden Hills Regional High School, where he has also been the basketball coach for 15 years. His commitment to art and education reflects the advice one of his teachers gave him: “Do what you love, and do a lot of it.”
